HC Deb 11 November 1976 vol 919 cc260-1W
Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much was outstanding in unpaid fines imposed in Scotland in each of the last five years.

Mr. Harry Ewing

The amounts of fines imposed in sheriff courts in Scotland which were outstanding at the end of the last five financial years were as follows:

1971–72 £496,186
1972–73 £519,139
1973–74 £616,287
1974–75 £701,179
1975–76 £754,168

The figures for 1975–76 exclude amounts, estimated at £3,000, outstanding in one small sheriff court, the accounts for which have not yet finally been audited.

It should be noted that these figures do not, and cannot, distinguish between amounts not yet liable to be paid—by reason of the time allowed for payment or the terms of an order for payment by instalment—and amounts overdue for payment.

Corresponding information about burgh and justice of the peace courts, and the district courts which replaced them on 16th May 1975, is not available.
