HC Deb 09 November 1976 vol 919 cc137-8W
27. Mr. Rifkind

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what steps his Department is taking to end the use of the Pentland Hills for live firing by the Army.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

We are not taking steps to end our use of the Pentland Hills completely. The Defence Lands Committee paid particular attention to the use of Dreghorn and Castlelaw ranges, both of which are in the Pentland Hills. The Committee recomended that firing at Dreghorn should cease, which would allow public access at all times, and that in order that this could be done a new range should be built at Castlelaw. The Government accepted the recommendations of the Defence Lands Committee and we still intend to put them into effect.
