HC Deb 02 November 1976 vol 918 c565W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement about unofficial vigilante patrols operating in border areas.

Mr. Mason

There have been a number of reports of illegal vigilante activity in recent months which have been or are being investigated by the police. Persons who undertake vigilante action face prosecution in the courts if they engage in unlawful acts. Moreover, they waste the time of the security forces, which are bound to keep them under surveillance and prevent possible confrontation with other members of the public. Those who wish to help the security forces should join the RUC Reserve or the UDR.
