HC Deb 02 November 1976 vol 918 c538W
33. Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the percentage of undergraduate places on degree courses that are currently unfilled.

Mr. Oakes

In terms of physical capacity in academic departments, it is estimated that altogether some 8 per cent. of places in universities in Great Britain and polytechnics in England and Wales are unfilled. It is not possible to distinguish between undergraduate and postgraduate places. This figure does not take account of availability of staff and other resources which also determine the number of students that may be accepted.
