HC Deb 28 May 1976 vol 912 cc423-6W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many jobs have been created in each of the last five years by the Urban and Rural Improvement Campaign, the local Enter- prise Unit and Enterprise Ulster, respectively.

Mr. Moyle

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 21st May 1976; Vol. 911, c. 742], circulated the following:

The average number of persons employed in each year under the Urban and Rural Improvement Campaign during the last five financial years was as follows:

1971–72 2,183
1972–73 4,066
1973–74 4,064
1974–75 3,261
1975–76 2,818

These figures are averages of four quarterly figures.

It is not possible to say precisely how many jobs have been created with assistance from the Local Enterprise Development Unit; but it is estimated that in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974 respectively, 344, 721, 1,050 and 749 jobs were provided in projects supported by LEDU. Figures are not yet available for 1975.

Between 14th September 1973, when Enterprise Ulster became a statutory body, and 31st December 1973 it provided a monthly average of 873 jobs. During the calendar years 1974 and 1975 the monthly average was 1,241 and 1,360 respectively. From 1st January 1976 to date the monthly average was 1,628. Enterprise Ulster is currently providing 1,700 jobs.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what were annual average unemployment figures in Northern Ireland for each of the last 10 years; and how they compare with remote areas in Great Britain.

Mr. Moyle

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 21st May 1976; Vol. 911, c. 743], gave the following reply
