HC Deb 28 May 1976 vol 912 c423W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what percentage new jobs established in Northern Ireland were of new jobs promoted in each of the last five years.

Mr. Moyle

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 21st May 1976; Vol. 911, c. 743], circulated the following

Since time elapses between the promotion of a project and the materialisation of employment in it, it is not possable to relate the number of new jobs promoted by government in any year to the number of new jobs created in the economy generally.

The number of jobs promoted by the Department of Commerce and the Local Enterprise Development Unit (LEDU) under the Northern Ireland Industries Development legislation in each of the last five years was as follows:

1971 1972 1973 1974 1975
7,925 8,030 6,796 5,936 3,391

It is not possible to give an exact total for the number of jobs created from all sources in these years. However, it is estimated that the following numbers of jobs were provided by firms which had received assistance under the same legislation from the Department or LEDU.

1971 1972 1973 1974 1975
6,306 5,794 8,690 8,488 3,652

The above figures do not include some 300 jobs which are currently being provided in a project assisted by the Northern Ireland Finance Corporation. The figure for 1975 relates only to firms assisted by the Department; information for that year about firms assisted by LEDU is not available.
