Mr. Marten

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the estimated cost of reducing the age for retirement pensions for men to 62½ years and raising it for women to 62½ years.

Mr. Deakins

About £650 million a year at current rates of benefit. This estimate is based on calculations related to social security payments and NI contributions in respect of those directly affected by the change in assumed retirement age.
