HC Deb 21 May 1976 vol 911 cc733-4W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what increases in quartering charges there have been in respect of Service hirings since the rents payable to the owners of such properties were last pegged.

Mr. William Rodgers

Increases in charges for Service married accommodation including hirings ranging between 8 per cent. and 18 per cent. were introduced from 1st April 1976, in accordance with the recommendations of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body. The rents payable to landlords for properties taken on as hirings are decided as the result of an agreement freely arrived at between the owner as landlord and the Ministry of Defence as tenant. The charges paid by the occupant are irrelevant to the terms of that agreement.

Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what gross profit his Department expects to make in the current financial year in respect of Service hirings.

Mr. William Rodgers

As there is no direct relationship between what rent the Department pays and the quartering charges paid by the Service occupant no question of profit arises.

Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of the total number of Service hirings is owned by members of the Armed Services.

Mr. William Rodgers
