asked the Secretary of State for Defence in how many cases during the last 12 months compensation has been paid by his Department to residents of the Irish Republic for damage admitted by the Army due to operations along the border in Northern Ireland.

Statistics were not maintained for the previous 12 months on the same basis, but the total number of persons recruited during April 1974 to March 1975 inclusive on Merseyside was 773 compared with a total of 914 for the period April 1975 to March 1976 inclusive.
