HC Deb 21 May 1976 vol 911 c762W
Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will issue a circular to local authorities about the need to guarantee mortgages for those people who do not normally meet the building societies' criteria for loan advances.

Mr. Freeson

I am considering this.

Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many mortgages, and to what value, have been guaranteed by local authorities in the last year.

Mr. Freeson

English authorities in 1975–76 reported guarantees for 45 mortgages. Information about the value of these mortgages is not available.
