Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of prisoners remanded without bail at the latest available date and the comparable figure for each of the last five years.

The number of unconvicted prisoners in custody in remand centres and local prisons on 31st March 1976 was 3,219. Comparable figures for each of the last five years are given below:

In addition there were 1,769 persons in custody who had been convicted and were awaiting sentence. The equivalent numbers in earlier years were:
