asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many laybys for police vehicles have been constructed on (a) the M1 and (b) the M6; what is their purpose; and what was the total cost.

34 police observation platforms have been constructed on MI and 34 on M6 at a cost of about £1,500 each. They were devised at the request of the police. Their purpose is to reduce police operating costs and increase road safety.
