HL Deb 22 March 1976 vol 369 c533WA
Lord NAPIER and ETTRICK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they consider it to be just and equitable that a Peer aged between eighteen and one and twenty should have no right to vote in a General Election (because he is a Peer) while at the same time he is debarred under Standing Order No. 2, dated 1685, from sitting and voting in the House of Lords; and if they do not so consider, what action do they consider appropriate to remedy this injustice and inequity.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

The Government incline to the view that when a suitable opportunity arises it might be appropriate to change the law so as to enable Peers to vote at Parliamentary Elections. Any review of the Standing Order would be a matter for the House itself.
