HC Deb 04 March 1976 vol 906 c746W
Mr. Nicholas Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many new dwellings became available in the public and the private sectors; and how many dwellings were demolished or closed, in each year since 1950.

Mr. Alec Jones

The numbers of dwellings completed in each year from 1950 to 1974 are given in Table 2.27 of the Digest of Welsh Statistics, No. 21, a copy of which is in the Library. The figures for 1975 are shown below:

Completions 1975
Public Sector Private Sector Total
8,336 8,900 17,236

The numbers of dwellings demolished or closed can be found in Table 2.34 of the same publication. The 1975 figure is 1,543.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish a table comparing percentage increases in total enumerated population, in the number of private households, and in the total number of dwellings available since 1951.

Mr. Alec Jones

The information requested is given in the following table:—

Percentage Increase 1951–71
Total enumerated population 5.1
Enumerated private households 20.0
Dwellings (occupied and vacant) 35.0

Changes in definition mean that figures for enumerated households and for dwellings are not strictly comparable.
