HC Deb 04 March 1976 vol 906 c726W
Mr. R. C. Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many administrative staff were employed in the education service at the end of 1975; and how this compares with the period immediately before local government reorganisation.

Mr. Mulley

I regret that this information is not available.

Mr. R. C. Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many administrative staff he expects to be employed in the education service in the years 1978–79 and 1979–80; and whether he anticipates the numbers employed will be reduced in proportion to the fall in the total school population predicted after 1976–77.

Mr. Mulley

Forecasts of the total number of administrative staff in the education service in the years 1978–79 are not available. However, the forecasts of current expenditure on schools and on further and higher education in table 2.10 of the White Paper "Public Expenditure to 1979–80" (Cmnd. 6393) include the cost of institutional non-teaching staff, but those engaged in administration cannot be separately identified. The expenditure specifically attributed to administration in the table cover the other administrative costs of local and central government and are related to the forecasts of overall current expenditure.
