asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the average working space per person in Civil Service premises which would constitute offices for the purposes of the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act in (a) Central London and (b) the whole of the United Kingdom.

In headquarters buildings in central London the average office space per non-industrial civil servant is 142 sq ft. This includes conference, interview and waiting rooms and office space taken up by files and records as well as working space proper. Accurate and up-to-date information about the rest of the country is not expected to be available until later this year.
