Mr. Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the numbers employed in his Department in December 1969, December 1973 and at the present date; and what posts had between these dates been reclassified as being either outside or within the Civil Service.

The numbers of staff employed in the Department of Employment in December 1969, December 1973 and February 1976 were 30,886, 33,929, and 21,515, respectively. In addition, casual staff numbering 210, 1,580, and 2,505 respectively were employed mainly in connection with the payment of unemployment benefit. Staff employed on functions transferred to the Manpower Services Commission, the Employment Service Agency and the Training Services Agency during 1974 ceased to be within the Civil Service but became part of the Civil Service again on 1st January 1976.
