HC Deb 14 June 1976 vol 913 cc18-9W
28. Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he proposes to take steps to encourage the use of British underwater pipes in the development of offshore oil and gas fields.

Mr. Kaufman

Submarine pipeline for the deep water areas where oil and gas developments are currently taking place in the North Sea must meet very stringent specifications. There is at present no United Kingdom source of supply for a product to this standard. The British Steel Corporation is keeping under review the economic case for enhancing its 44-inch pipe mill at Hartlepool to make pipe to the required specification taking into account the report on a possible gas-gathering pipeline system recently published by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy.
