HC Deb 12 July 1976 vol 915 c36W
Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what inspections are conducted to ensure that teachers comply with the religious requirements of the Education Act 1944; how many breaches of these requirements have been reported in the last 12 months; and what action was taken in respect of each reported breach during that period.

Miss Margaret Jackson

When Her Majesty's Inspectorate are inspecting or visiting schools they may look at religious instruction as they may at teaching in other subjects and they may also take note of the arrangements for school assemblies. Her Majesty's inspectors specialising in religious education may also visit schools specifically to look at this, as other subject inspectors may for their subject. No record is kept of occasions when inspectors may have given advice about whether the religious requirements of the 1944 Acts are being complied with.
