HC Deb 12 July 1976 vol 915 cc34-5W
42. Sir David Renton

asked the Attorney-General what savings it is hoped to obtain as a result of the passing into law of the Legal Aid (General) (Amendment (No. 2) Regulations 1976 (S.I. No. 628, 1976).

The Attorney-General

It is not possible to give a precise estimate of the savings, because of the inherent uncertainties, especially concerning the effect on settlements out of court and orders for costs. But there is no doubt that the former exemptions caused unjustifiable expense to the Legal Aid Fund, and that their removal will lead to a significant saving.
