asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what safety considerations are taken into account when choosing external colours for Government vehicles.

Mr. Armstrong

In deciding on external colours for Government vehicles the advice of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory that bright colours, and fluorescent yellow and fluorescent orange in particular, generally lead to improved visibility, but that the advantages in practice depend very much on road and lighting conditions, is taken fully into account.
