asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average proportion of a prisoner's sentence spent on parole for each of the following years, 1960, 1965, 1970 and 1975.

Dr. Summerskill:

The parole scheme was not inaugurated until 1st April 1968. I regret that the figures then available do not enable an answer to be given for 1970 and that figures for 1975 are not yet available. As regards prisoners in England and Wales whom it was decided in 1974 to release on parole, the period of parole granted represented on average about 20 per cent. of the sentence.
