HC Deb 29 January 1976 vol 904 cc318-9W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many schemes for comprehensive reorganisation involving direct-grant schools he has received since 1974; and if he will list those that he rejected; and if he will state which direct-grant schools have announced their intention of going independent as a result.

Mr. William Ross

The Mary Erskine School in Edinburgh is the only case approximating to the terms of the Question. However, what was at issue was not the integration of the school into the local authority system but the sale of the school premises to the local authority. If additional capital investment had been allocated to the Lothian Regional Council for the acquisition of this school the council intended to submit a modification to its scheme of educational provision providing for the use of the school as an education authority comprehensive school. Since I decided that additional capital investment was not justified the question of such a modification did not arise. The managers of the school have not intimated to me what their intentions for the school now are.
