HC Deb 29 January 1976 vol 904 cc344-5W
Mr. Brittan

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection (1) what was the cost of circulating to barristers a letter about licensing under the Consumer Credit Act;

(2) why barristers have been sent a letter about licensing under the Consumer Credit Act;

(3) why the letter sent to barristers about the arrangements under the Consumer Credit Act refers exclusively to the circumstances in which solicitors may need to be licensed.

Mr. Alan Williams

These are matters for the Director General of Fair Trading and I am asking him to write to the hon. Member. However, costs incurred by the Director General in administering the licensing provisions of the Consumer Credit Act will be financed by fees charged under the Act.

Sir D. Walker-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection why it was necessary to circulate to barristers documentation and forms relating to licensing applications in respect of carrying on the business of debt-collecting, consumer credit and the like; and what was the cost of this to public funds.

Mr. Alan Williams

This is a matter for the Director General of the Office of Fair Trading and I am asking him to write to the right hon. and learned Member. However, costs incurred in administering the licensing provisions of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 will be financed by fees charged under the Act.
