HC Deb 29 January 1976 vol 904 c332W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the current average length of stay of a patient in Broadmoor Hospital before being discharged back into the community.

Dr. Owen

During 1974 and 1975, 37 patients were discharged from Broad-moor Hospital to the community; their average stay was five years seven months. In addition 129 patients were transferred to less secure hospitals after average stays of six years three months. As the hon. Member will realise, the length of a patient's stay depends primarily on his response to treatment, and these averages conceal wide differences in length of stay varying from under one year to over 25 years.
