§ Mr. Budgenasked the Secretary of State for Employment what checks are made by his Department upon work permit holders both as to whether the holders are doing the work for which they entered and whether they have left the United Kingdom following the expiry of their work permits.
§ Mr. John FraserMy Department does not carry out specific checks on the work88W unemployed in each of the employment areas in the Leek parliamentary constituency at the most recent count; and what were the comparable figures for each of the two previous years.
§ Mr. John FraserThe rate of unemployment for the Leek Employment Office area was 5.5 per cent.—provisional—at January 1976, and 1.3 per cent. at January 1974. Owing to industrial action at local offices of the Employment Service Agency, information for January 1975 is not available. However, at February 1975 the rate was 2–2 per cent. Biddulph, Cheadle and Kidsgrove, which form part of the constituency, are part of the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area, which also includes five other employment office areas. Rates can be calculated for the travel-to-work area as a whole but not separately for its constituent parts. The rates for the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area were 4.0 per cent.—provisionally—at January 1976, 2.0 per cent. at February 1975 and 1.8 per cent. at January 1974.
§ Mr. Knoxasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were unemployed in each of the employment areas in the Leek parliamentary constituency at the most recent count; and what were the comparable figures in 1974 and 1975.
§ Mr. John FraserFollowing is the information available:
