Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment by how many the number of civil servants in his Department and other categories of public sector officials, including any industrial civil servants, increased between 1970–71 and 1974–75.

Mr. Crosland

Between 1st April 1971 and 1st April 1975 the number of staff in the Department, including local authority staff in road construction units, fell by 638. The Department was not created until November 1970.
