HC Deb 11 February 1976 vol 905 cc252-3W
Mr. Henderson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the average length of completed time on the unemployment register for a person in Scotland, England and Wales, respectively; and what is the average United Kingdom figure.

Mr. Booth

The following figures show the median length of time spent on the unemployment register by a person still unemployed on the date of the count. On 8th January 1976 the median was 13.5 weeks in Scotland, 15.1 weeks in England and 17.1 weeks in Wales. No figure is available for the United Kingdom. The median for Great Britain was 15.1 weeks on 8th January 1976 and for Northern Ireland 17.9 weeks on 11th December 1975.

Figures are not available for the average length of time spent on the unemployment register for a person who has completed a period of unemployment.

Mr. Henderson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what plans he has for collecting and collating the numbers of unregistered unemployed.

Mr. Booth

Estimates of the numbers of unregistered unemployed are obtained from the censuses of population and household surveys, such as the General Household Survey and the EEC Labour Force Survey. It is hoped to publish an article in theDepartment of Employment Gazette on the subject later this year.
