Mr. Joel Barnett

I will let the hon. Member have a reply as soon as possible.

Mr. John Moore

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, compared with 1963, what is the current burden per head of public expenditure.

Mr. Joel Barnett,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 9th February; Vol. 905, c. 49], gave the following information:

In 1963 total public expenditure per head was £218. In the year ended 30th September 1975 it was £908, or about £340 at 1963 prices. This estimate makes use of National Accounts estimates of consumption and investment at 1970 prices, with transfers etc. adjusted using the GDP deflator.
