HC Deb 09 February 1976 vol 905 cc98-9W
Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many of the new county local authorities have changed over to industrial methods of sewage treatment, disposal of toxic substances, and recycling of other waste materials; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell

Since April 1974 sewage treatment has been a function of water authorities. There have been no recent changes of significance in methods of treatment.

Waste disposal authorities—in England county councils—dispose mainly of non-toxic household waste. Methods vary, but most of the waste is disposed of to landfill, often as part of land reclamation.

The Waste Management Advisory Council is considering various possibilities for increasing the material recovered for recycling.
