HC Deb 09 February 1976 vol 905 c77W
Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of Scottish psychiatric hospitals was built prior to 1900; what percentage of NHS beds in Scotland are in psychiatric hospitals; and what percentage of the NHS budget in Scotland is spent on such hospitals.

Mr. William Ross

In some 80 per cent. of the psychiatric hospitals in the National Health Service in Scotland the original buildings in which patient accommodation was provided were built prior to 1900. In most of them, however, the accommodation has been substantially adapted and upgraded and, in many cases, has been extended by new buildings. Of the total number of NHS beds in Scotland, 30 per cent. are in psychiatric hospitals. In the financial year 1974–75, 9.5 per cent. of the NHS budget in Scotland was spent on psychiatric hospitals.
