HC Deb 09 February 1976 vol 905 cc17-9W
Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the estimated total cost of the community development projects up to the end of the programme.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

On present plans, the estimated total cost of the community development projects in England and Wales, excluding the cost of social action project and central support activity, is about £2.1 million.

Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the expenditure so far on the community development projects.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Expenditure up to 31st December 1975 on the community development projects in England and Wales, excluding expenditure on social action projects and central support activity, is estimated at about £1.55 million.

Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) why he is closing the Information and Intelligence Unit of the Community Development Project;

(2) what saving is expected to result from the closure of the Information and Intelligence Unit of the Community Development Project.

Mr. Ted Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consultations were held with the staff prior to his decision to close the Information and Intelligence Unit of the Community Development project.

Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what savings in Government expenditure he expects to make by discontinuing the grant to the Centre for Environmental Studies for the running of the central National Community Development Project Information and Intelligence Unit, four months before the grant was due to cease; whether he will direct the CES to compensate members of the Unit's staff whose contracts will be broken; and at what level compensation will be made:

(2) why, in the light of assurances given to the Community Development Project Information and Intelligence Unit's Director and other members of staff that the unit would continue until the end of the CDP Programme in late 1977, no consultation was undertaken with members of the Unit, the CES or the Unit's Steering Group before discontinuing the grant to the CES.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I have now decided to continue the grant to the Centre for Environmental Studies for the purposes of this Unit until the present contract expires.
