HC Deb 02 February 1976 vol 904 cc453-4W
Mr. Lawson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what total public expenditure has represented (a) as a percentage of GDP and (b) as a percentage of GNP for each year from 1939 to 1975, inclusive, the figures for 1975 being the best available estimates to date.

Mr. Joel Barnett

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing total public expenditure as a percentage of national disposable income in 1960, 1965, 1970, 1974 and 1975.

Mr. Joel Barnett

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave today to the hon. Member for Blaby (Mr. Lawson) showing the ratio of public expenditure to gross national product at factor cost. At current prices the only difference between the latter and national disposable income (NDI) is that NDI is measured after deducting net current transfers abroad. Since public expenditure includes transfers abroad comparison with NDI is not valid.
