HC Deb 02 February 1976 vol 904 c454W
Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the equivalent now, in terms of the retail price index, of £115 in April 1964.

Mr. Denzil Davies

In December 1975, £304 had a purchasing power of goods and services equivalent to that of £115 in April 1964. This estimate is based on the change in the General Index of Retail Prices to the latest date now available.

Mr. Adley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the value of the £ sterling against the US $ on 1st January 1974; and what was the comparable figure on 1st January 1975 and 1st January 1976.

Mr. Dell

1st January 1974 was a Bank Holiday but the closing middle market sterling/dollar rate on 2nd January 1974 was 2.3045. The rates for 2nd January 1975 and 2nd January 1976 were 2.3360 and 2.0245 respectively.
