HC Deb 02 February 1976 vol 904 cc404-5W
Mr. Clegg

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what would be the estimated cost of restoring Hadrian's Wall and Offa's Dyke.

Mr. Crosland

It is not clear what the hon. Member means by restoration. It has not been my policy, nor that of my predecessors, to put back ancient monuments in their care to their supposed form in antiquity, nor to encourage other owners—in whose ownership much of Hadrian's Wall and Offa's Dyke is—to do this. If, however, the hon. Member would care to write setting out in more detail the restoration he has in mind I will see if I can give some estimate of the cost.
