HC Deb 13 December 1976 vol 922 cc561-2W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total unemployment at the start of the present Government's income policy; and what it is at present.

Mr. Golding

The numbers registered as unemployed in Great Britain, seasonally adjusted and excluding school leavers, were 929,500 on 14th July 1975 and 1,253,100 on 14th October 1976. Unadjusted and including school leavers, the figures were 944,382 and 1,320,923 respectively.

Because of industrial action by some staff in the Department of Employment group, figures for November 1976 are not available.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total unemployment in Scotland among persons classed as professional and executive; how many of these are in Strathclyde; and how the current position compares with that in the same month of 1973, 1974 and 1975.

Mr. Golding

The following table shows the numbers of unemployed people in Scotland who were registered at employment offices for managerial and professional occupations. The latest date for which information is available is September 1976:

September 1973 4,207
September 1974 4,210
September 1975 5,180
September 1976 6,666
The figure for September 1976 included 3,581 who were registered at employment offices in Strathclyde. However, the Strathclyde figure may include some registered at the Glasgow professional and executive office who were outside the county. I regret that figures for earlier years are not available for Strathclyde and could be assembled only at disproportionate cost.
