Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the exact number of comprehensive, grammar, secondary modern, technical and independent schools, and sixth-form colleges in England and Wales at the present time; and if he will express these figures as proportions of the total number of schools.

The latest available information relates to January 1976. The numbers and percentages of each type of school catering for the secondary age group at that date were as follows:
