Mr Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his estimate of the total economic costs of personal accident injuries arising out of road accidents for the financial year 1975–76; what is the equivalent figure for personal injury costs arising out of the rail accidents for the same financial year; what were the corresponding figures for the financial years 1972–73, 1973–74 and 1974–75; and if he will make a statement.

The estimated total economic costs of personal injuries arising out of road accidents are set out below. They include the lost output of those killed or injured, medical and ambulance costs and a minimum allowance for pain, grief and suffering. The estimates are based on average costs in the financial years concerned.

1974–75 £335 million
1975–75 £397 million
