HC Deb 09 December 1976 vol 922 c308W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when the last traffic flow census was taken on the Carlisle/Birmingham stretch of the M6; and if he is able to draw conclusions from it about the total number of vehicles to use this road in both directions in a full year.

Mr. Horam

Four manual counts are conducted on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday of every month, between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent, near Newton-le-Willows (Lanes), on the Lancaster bypass, and on the Penrith bypass. Following is the estimated total traffic at each of these sites for the whole of 1975:

  • Stafford-Stoke: 16.65 million vehicles.
  • Newton-le-Willows: 11.72 million vehicles.
  • Lancaster: 10.22 million vehicles.
  • Penrith: 6.22 million vehicles.
