HL Deb 08 December 1976 vol 378 c672WA
Lord BURTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (1) How many permanent staff are employed by local government in Scotland, by regions; and
  2. (2) How many were employed in the present regions prior to local government reorganisation.

Lord KIRKHILL

The total number of fulltime and part-time local government employees in Scotland at 12th June 1976 was 298,273. Details of the numbers employed on a regional basis are not available to the Government; in any event, in view of the changes in areas and responsibilities which took place on reorganisation, it would not be possible to make direct comparisons with the numbers employed by the former authorities in the regions.
