HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 c813W
Mr. Charles Irving

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current ratio of numbers of teaching staff to other employees in the State education system; and what was the ratio of numbers of teaching staff to other employees in the year 1966 in that system.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The ratio of teaching to non-teaching staff employed full-time by the education departments of local authorities in England and Wales is provisionally estimated at 2.3:1 for March 1976; the ratio for June 1966 was the same. The corresponding ratios for part-time staff were 0.3:1 and 0.5:1. A comparison in terms of full-time equivalents is not available. Non-teaching staff include school meals staff, cleaners, caretakers and laboratory technicians, as well as clerical and administrative staff.
