HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 cc786-7W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the National Immigration Intelligence Unit was established; what has been its annual service since its inception; what has been the number of persons apprehended and brought before the courts, and the number convicted and deported, respectively; whether the unit is fully manned; what is the manpower deficiency in this service; how many civilians work in the unit; and what is the ratio of civilian staff to police.

Dr. Summerskill

Since the police Central Illegal Immigration Intelligence Unit was set up in March 1973, it has served increasingly to disseminate information about illegal immigration to all police forces. The unit is at present fully manned with 10 police officers and one civilian. Members of the unit do not undertake operational duties, and the other parts of the Question do not therefore arise.
