Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many families are currently in receipt of educational maintenance allowances in each local education authority; and what the total number of awards have been, and their costs, in each of the last five years.

My Department does not collect regular information relating to the number of educational maintenance allowances made by authorities or the number of families in receipt of such allowances; but a survey carried out in the autumn term 1974 showed the following:
