HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 c852W
Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the circumstances in which claimants are given financial assistance to pay for fares to and from social security offices and post offices to collect social benefits.

Mr. Deakins

In the case of both national insurance and supplementary benefits, persons who are asked to attend the office in connection with these claims may have their necessary fares refunded. In the case of supplementary benefit, fares necessarily incurred in connection with calls at the office other than by invitation may also be refunded, payment in each individual case being a matter for the discretion of the local offices according to the circumstances. The Department has no arrangement for the refund of fares to or from post offices to collect benefits.
