HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 cc876-7W
Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will tabulate in theOfficial Report those counties and districts operating separate bus lanes and bus gates, indicating what arrangements have been made for hackney carriages in each case.

Mr. Marks

No. There is no central record. Local authorities have powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1967 to instal such schemes, normally without reference to my Department.

Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he is now satisfied that all local authorities are meeting road traffic sign regulations in connection with bus and priority lanes for public transport and hackney carriages; and whether sufficient publicity has been given to bus, hackney carriage and private car owners and drivers as to the operation of these lanes.

Mr. Marks

I have no evidence that local authorities are not signing bus lanes and bus and taxi lanes properly. The signs prescribed last year are explained in the booklet "Know Your Traffic Signs", which is on sale at 40p and they will be included in the Highway Code as soon as possible.
