HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 cc666-7W
Mr. Forrester

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many full-time and full-time equivalent teachers were employed in primary and secondary schools in Stoke-on-Trent for each of the years 1970 to 1976; how many pupils were receiving full-time education in those schools; and what was the pupil-teacher ratio for each.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The information for the years 1970 to 1974 is given below. Since the reorganisation of local government, which took place on 1st April 1974, Stoke-on-Trent has been part of the Staffordshire local education authority and the extraction of subsequent figures for the area concerned would incur a disproportionate cost. However the latest figures for Staffordshire are as shown.

remains his policy to encourage students attending a postgraduate certificate in education course to qualify as teachers by giving them a mandatory award, in view of the number of qualified teachers now unable to obtain employment.
