asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of prisoners (a) awaiting trial and (b) awaiting sentence in prisons on 30th June 1976.

On 30th June 1976 there were 3,164 persons awaiting trial, and 1,770 persons who had been convicted and were awaiting sentence, in prisons and remand centres in England and Wales.
