HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 cc743-4W
Mr. Ioan Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what variation there has been in the cost of Japanese colour television sets imported into the United Kingdom since 1974; and what has been the percentage increase in the United Kingdom rate of inflation over the same period.

Mr. Meacher

,pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 2nd August 1976; Vol. 916],gave the following information:

The average value for Japanese colour sets derived from the United Kingdom import statistics was £114 cif in 1974 and £119 cif in the first half 1976. It should be stressed that changes in average values are influenced by differences in the mix of set sizes imported during the two periods, together with other factors such as different makes and qualities and transport costs. The retail price index over this period increased by 40 per cent.

Mr. Joan Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what progress he has made in agreeing a quota of television imports with the Japanese.

Mr. Meacher

,pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 2nd August 1976; Vol. 916],gave the following information:

We have been in touch with the Japanese about their plans for imports of colour televisions into Britain, and they have told us they do not expect any sudden increase in their exports in the second half of this year. 51,728 colour sets were imported from Japan in the first six months of this year, as compared with 70,535 in the corresponding period of 1975. We are currently discussing with the Japanese their expectations for portable monochrome sets.
