HC Deb 02 August 1976 vol 916 cc633-4W
Mr. Ioan Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he will give figures corn paring the percentage rise or fall in fob prices of Japanese motor cars and colour television receivers during the period 1973 to date.

Mr. Meacher

The following is the information:

EXPORT PRICES (1970=100)
Colour TV Percentage change Passenger cars Percentage change
1973 94.7 103.0
1974 105.3 +11.2 125.2 +21.6
1975 103.7 -1.5 133.0 +6.2

Source: Statistics Department, Bank of Japan—Prices indices annual 1975.

No later information is available. As the indices are undefined, it is unclear whether they are based on prices or unit values, the total value of exports divided by numbers of goods. The currency is the Yen and the measure almost certainly f.o.b.

Mr. Joan Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what progress he has made in agreeing a quota of television imports with the Japanese;

(2) what variation there has been in the cost of Japanese colour television sets imported into the United Kingdom since 1974; and what has been the percentage increase in the United Kingdom rate of inflation over the same period.

Mr. Meacher

I will reply to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.
