HC Deb 02 August 1976 vol 916 c614W
Mr. Robert Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what instructions he has given or intends to give to officers of his Department who receive applications for social security payments from striking bank clerks and members of the Irish Bank Officials Association who have entered the United Kingdom for the duration of their current strike.

Mr. Orme

No special instructions are necessary. So far as unemployment benefit is concerned, persons coming from the Republic of Ireland cannot normally get British unemployment benefit unless they have become insured as employed persons since coming into this country. As to supplementary benefit, the Supplementary Benefits Commission would use its discretionary powers to prevent payment being made to a striker who came here from the Republic of Ireland to escape his financial difficulties.
